Pivot screening to protect the space

Turn your players into screen-setting-superstars!
How to get clear shots on goal using the screen
This week's Sportplan session looks at an effective and skilful way that your players can "do a Moses". Instead of parting the waters on the Red sea you can part the defenders on the court - all they need to do is pivot and set the screen to create unmanned territory for players to run into.
In order to clear the path for an attack your players will need to move fast, using either the front or the back screen in order to block the defenders route to the ball. To help your players become screen-setting-superstars we've devised this pivot and screen session which works on showing your players different screening techniques that they can use in their next game.
If your players have never used screens before then don't worry, you can start at half pace and slowly increase the tempo as your players become more confident.
The first part of this session looks at giving and going. Players pass the ball up the pitch to another player on their team; this player must receive the ball and then pivot in front of the defender. By using their body as a shield they can return the ball to the first player, having now cleared the path for them to run through unchallenged. After this we look at further ways that the screen can be implemented in a game, working on awareness (knowing when to set a screen) and also linking multiple screens together to out manoeuvre more than one defender at once.
In you players' next game they'll have the upper hand, not only knowing how and when to use them themselves but also being able to spot when their opponents might be trying to use them as well.

Get ready for your next game - cover all the skill areas!
Bumper Session: Defending, Passing and Shooting
This week's Sportplan session is a bumper edition working on three key skill areas: Defending, Passing and Shooting. Effectively this week we've squeezed two super sessions into one, you can choose to teach it as one intensive session or spread it across two sessions.
Don't just try the free drill this week, have at a look at the whole session and see what Sportplan can bring to your trainings with our library of drills, coaching tools and ever growing community of coaches from around the globe.
The key to a good training is that it covers key areas that can later be transferred directly to the court, however if the session is uninspiring then it is unlikely that you players are going to take much away from the drills and plays you cover. To help you 'gee up' your players and inspire them before their next game we've made this fast paced session which will keep your players on their toes - working on passing speed and variety, shadowing and contact defending as well as shooting accuracy and variety.
Working in small groups you will be able to set up these drills and then take a step back and observe, giving you a chance to observe your players in action and locate any areas that may need additional attention.

Double D - Dribbling and Defending

Coach dribbling and dribbling defence in this complete session.
Double D - Dribbling and Defending
This week's Sportplan session looks at the two Ds of handball, dribbling and defending.
The two Ds are distinctly opposite, like yin and yang, light and dark or vanilla and chocolate. Dribbling is essential for players looking to to carry the ball down the court and score just as defending is equally important for players hoping to dispossess the other team and in turn score themselves.
To make sure the two Ds in your team exist in perfect harmony we look at how you can help your players to perfect their dribbling technique, making sure the ball is bounced in front of their body between hip and chest height. By dribbling in this way your players make it difficult for defenders to swoop in from the side and steal the ball and also ensures that they are in control of the ball, not the other way round.
It's important though to think about your defensive game which is why this session has a defensive element built into it too, making sure your players keep their eye on the ball, not the player, and snatch the ball away. To help you coach this aspect your team will play a game of bulldog, where the defenders must try and stop as many dribbling players as they can.
Try this session with your team today and improve both sides of their game in one fell swoop.
